I played around I admit it, one day this one the other the next. That was until I got a pair of the new DMT Vega. Now I am a one shoe man. The Sidi, Lake & Shimano shoes I had have either shacked up with one of my colleagues or found a suitable mate on eBay.com
Why you ask? It's the perfect fit, it's the wide toe box, it's the BOA fasteners, it's the light weight. Wait did i mention the vented sole and the little Velcro pad that keeps the tongue from shifting to the side. It's all that and and more.
There is a sole mate for everyone, the Vega might not be that for everyone but I am confident it's the perfect shoe big portion hard riding road cyclists. DMT must have been getting the same feedback from the riders I get when people call to ask me for shoe advise. Seems we are all looking for wide toe box, stiff sole, easy to use fasteners, something that won't let us down. Something that's well ventilated and light. With confidence I can say the Vega does all this and at $375 retail (friends of Glory always get a better deal) it's a reasonable price as well. Black or white only and I think it's good to have one of each.
Down side? If you have a thin/low volume foot the Vega might be too spacious. If you like your shoe to really hold your foot snug then the Vega might at all time feel a little light and lose.
Size Advise: The Vega runs big, we have had a good few return for exchange and always exchanges for smaller size. The shoe is more voluminous and wide than it is long. For me coming from Sidi 44.5 and Shimano 44 the DMT fits me in a 44
No Speedplay sole? Seems a few shoe makers who had offered the Speedplay specific sole option in 2012/13 did not do so in 20014 and DMT are one of these. The Vega is available in Look/Shimano/Time 3 hole only. I don't see this as a downside for Speedplay pedal owners as the shoe has a very thin stiff sole and the stack is very low. The downside with the 4 hole Speedplay soles is they commit you to Speedplay for the life off the shoe, seems the pedal wears the carbon sole of the shoe and the way the sole has to be designed to accomodate the Speedplay shoes means a really thin carbon which can be a little flexy. Not sole flex but the cleat interface.
Vents that really work. The Vega has a ventilation system with a hole in the front of the carbon sole and channels that allow air to flow through holes in the insoles. It really works, when you first ride with the Vega you notice it, after some time you don't when you get used to it but for sure these are the coolest shoes I have ridden. So much so that in cold weather I cover the vent with some electrical tape.
Boa va Straps: Like the Dave Chapell episode where him and Prince play blouses vs. shirts both sides have something to offer but for me the Boa is easier to use and holds the foot firmer with less pressure spots. It's quick and easy to tighten on the bike and when the ride is done the shoes come off really quick.
I give the DMT Vega the both thumbs up. Give them a try, if they are not for you send them right back.
